BJP’s win consolidates Rawat’s position

Saturday, 25 May 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

The resounding victory achieved by Bharatiya Janata Party candidates on all five seats in Uttarakhand has also boosted the stature of Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat even though he has credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party workers for the win. With the BJP winning all five seats in Uttarakhand while also increasing its vote share to 61 per cent, expectations are also rising for a leader from Uttarakhand being accorded the position of a minister at the Centre.

The campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand saw top BJP leaders including the PM, party’s national president Amit Shah, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and union ministers addressing public rallies in various parts of the state. However, it was chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat who appeared to work harder than the others, addressing 52 public rallies across the state during March-April. Outside Uttarakhand too, he addressed more than a dozen public gatherings in five states in support of party candidates. Observers point out that the victory of BJP candidates in the parliamentary polls has further consolidated the chief minister’s position. During his term, earlier the BJP also achieved victories in the local body and cooperatives elections.

The chief minister has credited PM Modi, the party workers and people of Uttarakhand for the resounding victory achieved in the Lok Sabha polls. However, observers opine that with the BJP not only retaining its hold on the five parliamentary constituencies but also increasing its vote share to 61 per cent, the State is likely to benefit from the electoral outcome. Further, with this electoral performance, the Trivendra Singh Rawat government has also consolidated its position. Aspects like the zero tolerance for corruption, implementation of Transfer Act to eradicate irregularities in transfers of government employees and introduction of the Atal Ayushman Uttarakhand Yojana among others had elicited much praise also from the BJP national president Amit Shah during his campaign rallies in the State.
