The Congress on Monday accused the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre of deliberately delaying the appointment of Lokpal to “protect its corporate friends.”
A selection panel of anti-corruption ombudsman of India reportedly cleared the name of former Supreme Court judge Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose on Sunday as the country’s first Lokpal.
Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary and chairman of its communication wing Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said the Lokpal was named at the fag-end of the government’s tenure keeping an eye on elections.
Trivedi in statement also mocked the BJP’s chowkidar campaign, saying the party leaders were deputing themselves as ‘chowkidar’ after looting the country for five years.
Regarding the appointment of Lokpal, Trivedi said it was the UPA government which took the initiative and accordingly a bill with a provision for appointing a Lokpal within a period of one year was introduced in 2013.
The BJP government deliberately delayed the appointment to shield its “corrupt corporate friends.”
“Now when it is time for them to bid a farewell they are posing themselves as ‘Chowkidar’”, he said.
He further alleged that perpetrators of “big thefts” have now simultaneously become chowkidars of the country.
“People of Chhattisgarh very well know their ‘drama’ and do not consider them as Chowkidars. They will give them befitting reply in the upcoming elections,” he further added.
