The Bharatiya Janata Party’s much-hyped membership drive became the butt of joke when party legislator from Chandauli, Sushil Kumar, enrolled several students of a state-run school as members of the party and welcomed them by giving away ‘angavastram’.
The issue came to light after a video of the enrolment of these new members went viral.
As per reports, BJP legislator Sushil Singh, who is nephew of don-turned-politician Brijesh Singh, went to a high school in Sayyadraja in Chandauli on Wednesday and entered a room where students of class X were studying.
‘’Singh not only enrolled many students, who were minor, as party members, but also offered them saffron angavastram bearing BJP election symbol which they (students) accepted,’’ said a school teacher on condition of anonymity.
The teacher said the BJP MLA also asked the students to fill in membership forms and read out the party pledge.
Later, the legislator addressed the students in the class and told them about the virtues of the BJP.
The BJP has started a membership drive, which was kicked off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his one-day visit to Varanasi on July 6.
The BJP has set a target of enrolling around 50 lakh new party members. The party at present has 1.13 crore members in UP.
The membership drive will continue till July 31.
