Chhattisgarh BJP on Wednesday sought a high- level probe into the jailbreak attempt at Katghora Sub-jail, which led to the death of one inmate and injury to another on July 13. .
It also demanded stern action against erring jail authorities and compensation for the under-trial prisoner who died while trying to escape.
Addressing media persons, leader of the Opposition Dharamlal Kaushik and BJP’s Akaltara MLA Saurabh Singh said a fact- finding committee of the party under the chairmanship of former home minister Nankiram Kanwar conducted an enquiry into the incident.
Saurabh Singh said it was hard to believe the version of the jail authorities that both Ramesh Kumar and Ashok Kumar, who were on judicial custody on charges of theft tried to jump the 25-feet high boundary wall from the roof of the jail barrack.
He pointed out that distance between the wall and the barrack roof was around 30 feet and claimed that there were discrepancies in the statement of jail authorities.
Stating that the botched jailbreak was detected during the roll call in the evening, the BJP leader said the two inmates were initially taken to a local community centre to treat their injuries.
Ashok, who fractured one of his legs in the incident, was later referred to District Hospital Korba. Based on government doctor’s report he was taken back to barrack from the hopspital.
But nine hours later, the other injured inmate Ramesh was brought to the hospital again (on July 14, at 3.30 am) where doctors declared him brought dead, the BJP leaders claimed.
Kaushik stated that post-mortem report was yet to come. He also alleged that no action was initiated against the jail authorities. “The issue will also be raised in state assembly,” he said.
Meanwhile, Korba collector Kiran Kaushila has already ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and sought report within 30 days.
