BJP to retain Capital, predict exit polls

Monday, 20 May 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Exit poll projections of the national Capital do not augur well for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress as the BJP appears to have retained all the seven seats. Though exit polls survey predicted that it may lose one seat but they are also not very sure about it. The survey projects only one seat for the Congress.

Today’s Chanakya predicted all seven seats in favour of BJP while NewsX/Neta showed that BJP will secure win over five seats and Congress can get two seats in.

However, ABP-CSDS- shows clean sweep for BJP in Delhi, predicted to win five out of the seven Lok Sabha seats with chances for Congress and AAP to get a seat each

As per the survey of Times Now-VMR the BJP may sweep all the seven seats in Delhi. It said that Congress’s vote share will increase from 15.2 per cent in 2014 to 24.2 per cent in 2019. It predicted a decline in vote share of the BJP — from 46.4 per cent in 2014 to 42.68 per cent in 2019.

According to the exit poll, the AAP’s vote share will take a dip from 32.9 per cent to 25.6 per cent.

The survey projects that others vote share will increase by 1.42 per cent - from 4.3 per cent in 2014 to 5.72 per cent in 2019.

Congress’s refusal to forge an alliance with the AAP ensured a triangular fight in Delhi. At present, AAP is in power in the city-state with Arvind Kejriwal as the chief minister who was also the star campaigner of the party in Delhi.

He held several road-shows to seek support of voters in favour of AAP candidates on Delhi’s seven Lok Sabha Seats.

AAP which secured 67 out of the 70 assembly seats in 2015 election seems to have lost its popularity, while BJP which contested election on the issue of ‘nationalism’ seems to have secured votes divided between AAP and Congress.

AAP contested election focusing mainly on full statehood of Delhi and other developmental issue.

The BJP seems to have overcome the impact of demonetization, sealing of commercial establishments and Goods and Services Tax.

The seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi are Chandni Chowk, North East Delhi, East Delhi, New Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi, and South Delhi. Some of the key candidates who contested election were Gautam Gambhir, Sheila Dikshit, Atishi, Raghav Chadha and Manoj Tiwari.
