Cancer patients are on the rise in Balangir district. In 2017-18, 103 people were given chemotherapy cycle and the number of people given the therapy in 2018-19 increased to 265. And till September, a total of 173 people were given chemotherapy cycle, says District Cancer Nodal officer Dr Abinash Mishra.
Besides this, around 1,000 people have been checked in the Outpatient Department, Mishra says further.
In a related development, members of the Jan Morcha, a social organisation, led by Basu Rath and others submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district Collector demanding setting up of a cancer hospital at Balangir.
“We submitted a memorandum for setting up a cancer hospital at Balangir in view of the increasing number of cancer patients in the district.
The poor people of Balangir and neighbouring districts will be able to get treatment here, rather than going to distant places and incurring lots of expenses,” said Prasant Senapaty of the Morcha.
