The roads in the national Capital have become more unsafe for Delhiites as there is steep rise in the traffic violations including dangerous driving, drunken driving and over speeding of vehicles which is the major cause of fatal accidents. A total of 64,79,854 'challans' have been issued in 2018 with a rise of around 2 lakhs challan while in 2017, they were 62,87,486. Also, for the first time the traffic police's account has filled with outstanding amount up to Rs 105.99 crore by collecting challans.
Also, as per the data shared by the traffic police, the road violations are going up since last three year.
As per the data shared by the Delhi Traffic Police, violations of road safety rules especially red light jumping, triple riding, riding without helmet, drunken driving and improper parking has been increased in 2018 as compared to 2017. A total of 37,188 challans issued for drunken driving in 2018 while it was 33,343 in 2017. A total number of 12,11,955 challans were issued against red light jumping last year, while in 2017 it was1,67,911.
The drunken driving increasing specially during the festivals seasons such as in the Holi, before Diwali, Christmas and New Year eve. Also, the officials on condition of anonymity also said that the drunken driving also increases during the wedding season starts from October to February.
Delhi Traffic Police is maitaning a close watch on specific locations especially the areas popular for pubs, clubs, malls and party oriented places . Connaught Place, Saket, Hauz Khas, Vasant kunj DlF mall are some of the areas where triple riders and drunk drivers are often caught, Special Commissioner of Police (traffic) taj Hassan said.
Further, a large number of challans were issued for jumping improper parking, riding without helmets and triple riding. A total of 192452 challans were issued for triple riding in 2018, whereas in 2017 it was 1,56,043. Further, a total of 11,63,438 challans were issued last year against improper parking while in 2017, 10,88,734 challans were issued.
Moreover, the traffic police has towed away a total 1,85,318 vehicles in 2018 and around 1,68,040 vehicles were towed away in 2017.
However, as compared to the previous year, there has been a slight dip in the accident rates in the year 2018.A total of 6274 accidents were took place last year, out of which 4712 were simple and 1562 fatal accidents. While, it was 6386 in the year 2017. Further there is 6 percent decline in the fatal accidents as compared to the previous years.
