Chandigarh Member Parliament, Kirron Kher on Tuesday raised the issue of construction of ring road around the city in Lok Sabha.
Stating that the ring road is crucial for Chandigarh, the MP said that it is proposed to help prevent around 1.5 lakh vehicles from Punjab and Haryana entering the city daily.
It has been a long pending demand of my constituency-Chandigarh, Kher said while speaking in the Parliament.
She said that last year, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had approved this demand and agreed to construct it under Bharatmala phase-1 project, but the project is not moving forward.
The MP requested the Union Ministry to provide required attention to this project and help in resolving any issues that are holding it up.
Kher also thanked the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways for recently approving a six-lane flyover and a four-lane underpass at the Tribune Chowk.
She urged that the flyover project should be extended till Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 Chandigarh.
Notably, it was due to the spurt in traffic and enhanced flow of vehicles from outside the city that Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore had last year written to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road, Transport and Highways to construct the ring road around Chandigarh.
The union territory of Chandigarh is a joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.
The Chandigarh Master Plan 2031 had also recommended creation of the ring road/bypass around the city. Following the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, an interstate regional committee comprising the chief secretaries of the two neighboring states and Advisor to UT Administrator had resolved to plan the ring around Chandigarh.
