Sarees from Chhattisgarh are not getting admiration only from those who wear these elegant female outfits. Even connoisseurs of arts are falling for them for the artworks woven on them.
Renowned painter Ratnakar Lal, who visited the on-going exhibition at Chhattisgarh Sadan, said he was amazed to see the work done by the weavers on sarees.
“Weavers from Chhattisgarh are no less than an artist. Just like paintings, each woven saree I am seeing is a master piece in itself. I am totally stunned to see how beautifully the weavers have woven motifs, murals and art form of Chhattisgarh on a six yard cloth,” Ratnakar Lal was quoted as saying in a government communiqué.
The painter, who has done a Ph.D. on folk art, said painting or weaving the traditional art and craft of the state on sarees is a great contribution by the weavers towards preserving the cultural heritage of our country.
Appreciating the “Kantha work” on a saree made by a weaver from Raigarh, the painter said, “I am seeing the saree as a canvas on which this weaver has excellently depicted the tale of Shakultala. The colour, the thread work etc are all amazing.”
The exhibition at Sadan will be on till July 25.
