Civic agencies remove political hoarding, banners

Following the directions of the Election Commission regarding removing or covering of such hoardings, civic agencies in the national Capital swung into action and started a drive to remove all these banners and hoardings from their jurisdictions.

Officials of the all three corporation confirmed that they have received the instructions from the Election Commission and work has begun on removing or covering of such hoardings. Taking swift action, South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has removed more than 13,000 hoardings banners and posters in its all four zones keeping in view implementation of code of conduct immediately after announcement of 2019 general elections in the country, a senior SDMC official said.

In the drive, all publicity material related to political matters/ elections are being removed, he said.

The official said that under Najafgarh zone, 1610 hoardings and posters have been removed and accordingly disposed off as per standard procedure.

He said “137 hoardings were removed from areas comes under West zone. While the officials of South zone of SDMC removed 2246 6927 posters, banners and hoardings. Under Central zone, 2051 posters, 449 banners and 434 boards were removed,”

A senior official of the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation said that an instruction was received on Monday regarding removing all public hoardings carrying images of party leaders, government schemes or any political references in accordance with the model code of conduct and work has begun to comply with the order.

“All public hoardings carrying images of party leaders, government schemes or any political references have been ordered to be removed or covered up in accordance with the model code of conduct,” Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh said.

Another senior official said use of any imagery of armed forces or invoking references to air strike on posters, hoardings or any other publicity platform “would amount to violation of the poll code of conduct”.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s pictures on Mohalla Clinics establishments or on hoardings put up for the fourth anniversary of the AAP government are also being removed or covered in keeping with the model code of conduct.

Kejriwal government’s ‘Chaar Saal Mein Hua Kamal’ themed hoardings still dot various public places and Delhi Metro station buildings.

Kailash Colony metro station in south Delhi till Tuesday carried advertorial hoarding on the station’s building till late afternoon. “The licensees put up advertisements in metro premises as per the laid down guidelines from time to time and are mandated to abide by them. And they take measures accordingly to ensure adherence to the moral code of conduct,” a DMRC official said.
