CM, Tiwari visit flood-hit areas

Thursday, 22 August 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Manoj Tiwari visited Yamuna flood plain area to take a stock of ground situation. Yamuna River breached safety mark on the third consecutive day. Meeting the flood affected people there, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP leaders assured all possible assistance.

Over 15,000 people living in the Yamuna flood-plains have been shifted to tents set up by various Government agencies after the river water inundated low lying areas.

The Yamuna continued to flow well above the danger mark on Wednesday but Delhi Government officials said the water level was constant at 206.60 metres for several hours and was likely to recede.

Kejriwal met the people at tents set up in the Usmanpur area. "Met the flood affected people at the Yamuna bank. Most people have left their belongings in their houses but its good thing that there is no loss of life. Arrangements of tents, food, water and medicine have been made. Let us know if there is any shortage, we will immediately do the needful," Kejriwal tweeted after the visit.

Following the request of the people to make lights and fans available, the CM directed officials to organise adequate facilities immediately. The CM requested people in relief camps to contact Government officials present at the camp in case of any needs. After the visit, he tweeted, "Most families could not collect their belongings before leaving their homes. Fortunately, we have not lost any life so far. We have made arrangements for tents, food, water, medicines for all. If there's any other requirement, we will immediately ensure it is arranged."

When the Chief Minister asked a young woman if she had received food yet, she expressed her satisfaction and said, "Yes we had chhole puri in the morning. Food and water is readily available." The Chief Minister has also requested people not to venture back into the flooded region for their belongings as it is extremely dangerous. "The river water will lower by tomorrow," he said.

"I have spoken to Haryana Government. They told that they are reducing the amount of water being sent towards Delhi. We are expecting the situation to improve by Thursday," said Kejriwal.

The Chief Minister also appealed to the people to be alert and move to the tents set up by the Government before the river waters reach their homes.

The BJP leaders including party's Delhi unit chief Manoj Tiwari and former Union Minister Vijay Goel also met the flood affected people and offered them help. Goel alleged that during his visit, people complained about unavailability of tents, toilets and food at the Usman Khadar area.

However, Delhi's Revenue Minister Kailash Gehlot said people living in relief camps were appreciating the efforts of the Government.

"Efforts of Delhi Govt being appreciated by people staying in Relief Camps. Food, water and other necessary relief materials being provided. Officers of  Revenue Dept in coordination with other Depts are working round the clock," Gahlot tweeted.

The river flows through six districts of Delhi whose low-lying areas are prone to flood. The administration has deployed 30 boats to prevent accidental drowning and to tackle any eventualities.
