Suraj Sethi, who saved lives of six persons after his death, has become an inspiring story for millions in Odisha. His name is now going to be immortalised as Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced to institute an annual award in his name.
Suraj was a resident of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district and working in Surat. He lost his life in a road accident on October 29. After struggling for life about five to six days in hospital, he was declared brain dead on November 2 by the doctors. His parents, who were contacted by a local NGO, decided to donate his organs to save lives of others. Accordingly, his heart, liver, two kidneys and both eyes were transplanted to save lives of six persons.
Suraj’s heart was carried by plane to the Fortis Hospital in Mumbai and transplanted in the body of a woman. His kidneys and liver were transplanted into three persons in Ahmedabad and the eyes went to two persons in Surat.
Suraj’s father Babuli Sethi and mother Gitanjali met the Chief Minister Patnaik at the Lok Seva Bhawan on Monday. Patnaik highly appreciated their noble act and said this would be an “exemplary inspiration to the society”. He announced a homestead land and Biju a Pucca Ghar for them. He also announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh from the CMRF in recognition of their inspiring humane act.
