Karwa Chauth turned sour for the wife of a Border Security Force (BSF) head constable as the news of his martyrdom reached her in Firozabad on Thursday.
Sunita Devi’s husband and BSF head constable Vijay Bhan Singh was shot dead by Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday, while a BSP patrol was trying to trace an Indian fisherman along India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
While Singh died after being hit by a bullet in the head, another constable-cum-boatman suffered gunshot on his right hand.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mourned the death and announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for Singh’s widow, Rs 5 lakh for his mother and a government job to one of the dependants.
Singh’s family members slipped into a state of shock upon receiving the news of his death.
Tragically, Singh’s wife Sunita was observing fast on Karwa Chauth to pray for her husband’s well-being and long life when the news of his sudden death reached her.
“I spoke to him over the phone on Wednesday. He used to call me every day. My son got a call about his death and started crying. Later, he told me that my husband was no more,” Sunita told reporters late on Thursday night.
A native of Firozabad’s Chamrauli village, Singh joined the BSF in 1990 and is survived by his wife and two sons.
Singh’s brother Mahendra Singh said, “I have spoken to the Commandant, who confirmed his martyrdom. Other than this, we don’t have any other information.”
