Cong in Haryana gets into polls mode belatedly

Monday, 16 September 2019 | MANOJ KUMAR | Chandigarh

As the Election Commission of India is expected to declare the election date of Haryana Assembly polls anytime now,  Congress in Haryana finally seemed to be getting into election mode and putting its act in place.

After former Haryana Chief Minister and chairman of the election management committee Bhupinder Singh Hooda sounded poll bugle by launching the election campaign from his native village Sanghi in Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency in Rohtak district, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) has decided to launch a statewide Workers’ Sammelans to test the nerve of party leaders and workers. The process started from Sunday.

Selja who has been recently appointed as HPCC chief and ex-CM Hooda as chief of election campaign committee are making all efforts to unite the party ahead of elections.

Recently, Hooda went to the residence of former CLP leader Kiran Choudhry at Sunder Nagar in New Delhi and held a meeting with her.

Meanwhile, under this programme Kumari Selja, president, HPCC and Hooda, leader of Haryana Congress Legislature Party will meet the Party leaders and workers. Other senior leaders of the Congress Party will also participate in these sammelans.

HPCC chief Kumari Selja said, “There is great enthusiasm among the party workers. The people of Haryana are fed up with the atrocities and anti-people policies of the BJP government and want a change.”

The party chief also exhorted to the party rank and file through her statement to become more active and join these sammelans with great gusto.

Selja said that the first workers’ sammelan of this series was held at Subzi Mandi, Sector 16 in Faridabad on Sunday. The rank and file from Hathin, Hodal, Palwal, Prithla, NIT Faridabad, Badkhal, Faridabad and Tigaon Vidhan Sabha constituencies participated in the meet.

A similar sammelan of party workers and leaders of Gurugram Lok Sabha Constituency was held at district Congress committee office, Kaman Sarai, Gurugram. The rank and file from Bawal, Rewari, Pataudi, Badshahpur, Gurugram, Sohna, Nuh, Ferozepur Jhirka and Punhana Vidhan Sabha Constituencies took part in this sammelan.

On September 16, the sammelan of Congress workers and leaders from Nilo Kheri, Karnal, Indri, Assandh, Gharaunda, Panipat City, Panipat Rural, Israna and Samalkha segments Karnal Lok Sabha Constituency will be held at Jat Bhawan, Sector 12 in Karnal. The same day at 3 pm, a similar sammelan will be held at Grand Imperial on Murthal Road in Sonipat in which leaders and workers from Sonipat, Kharkhauda, Rai, Baroda, Gohana, Gannaur, Safidon, Jind and Jullana Vidhan Sabha constituencies will participate. Each seminar will cover six to eight assembly constituencies.

Selja said similar sammelans will be held in the remaining six Lok Sabha constituencies in the next few days. Moreover, the party has recently formed campaign and election committees for assembly elections with former minister Ajay Singh Yadav heading the campaign panel and state Congress chief Kumari Selja heading the election panel.

Haryana based political observer opine that sooner or latter Congress has finally got into election mode and put its act in place. The party has started statewide Workers’ Sammelans and the dissident leaders and workers will be exposed during workers’ sammelan. The turnout of the workers during the seminars would reflect the acceptability of Selja and Hooda. Former HPCC chief Ashok Tanwar had recently said that he would solo work for the party. He would not work under party chief Selja and CLP leader Hooda. Political observers said that BJP has already started its election campaign around a month ago. CM Manohar Lal Khattar’s 'Jan Ashirwad Yatra' which was flagged off by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh from Kalka town, some 20 km from Chandigarh, on August 18 was concluded in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vijay Sankalp rally in Rohtak on September 8. Union Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah had also addressed a public rally in Jind on August 16.

Regional parties like Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), Swaraj India and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) have already started its campaign around a month ago in the form of meeting with party workers and interacting with the people though door to door campaign.

Meanwhile, Congress has also formed a six-member screening committee for Haryana assembly elections, with senior party leader Madhusudan Mistry as its chairman. This panel will select candidates for the Assembly polls.

Other members of the panel appointed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi include Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja, Congress legislative party leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and AICC general secretary state in-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad. Congress leaders Deepa Dasmunsi and Devender Yadav have also been made members of the panel.
