Cong likely to announce JPCC president today

Sunday, 25 August 2019 | Saurav Roy | Ranchi

Congress National President Sonia Gandhi is likely to announce the name of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee’s (JPCC) new chief within the next 24 hours, said a JPCC office bearer who was in New Delhi on Saturday. Senior party leaders from Jharkhand met Gandhi at the office of All India National Congress on Friday evening and shared their views on the contenders for the important position.

“Some senior leaders from Jharkhand met Soniaji yesterday (Friday). It was an informal meeting wherein our State leaders assured the national president that they will go to the assembly polls as a united team,” said the office bearer.

Former State Minister Geetashree Oraon, former Union Minister Subodh Kant Sahay, former JPCC President Pradeep Balmuchu and former MP Rameshwar Oraon were among the leaders who met Gandhi on Friday.

The top position in the Congress party’s state unit has remained vacant since former MP Ajoy Kumar’s dramatic resignation from the position on August 9, a day before the Congress Working Committee (CWC) met in the national capital. Kumar had spit venom in his three-page resignation letter to former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and accused senior JPCC leaders of toxic nepotism and having vested interest.

However, after Kumar’s exit, the party leaders here are hoping to get a leader who can keep all the party workers united on road to the assembly polls. All hell broke loose in the Congress party in Jharkhand last month when supporters of Kumar and former union minister Subodh Kant Sahay locked horns at the State headquarters of the party in Ranchi and the tiff between them transformed into an ugly scuffle, which broke open the lid of bottled up differences within the party. The party’s high command summoned senior Jharkhand leaders to New Delhi and Kumar tendered his resignation a week after the meeting.

Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Alamgir Alam and former State president and Lohardaga legislator Sukhdeo Bhagat are leading the race for the position of JPCC president, party insiders said. Alam was among the few leaders who received praise from Kumar in his resignation letter, which was otherwise riddled with critical rhetoric. On the other hand, Bhagat had led the party to elections in 2014. Bhagat as well as Alam have maintained a neutral stand in the party and are equally respected by leaders and workers from all lobbies, said an office bearer who has been in the thick of events lately.
