Congress protest  against power tariff hike ends

Tuesday, 10 September 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

The four-day agitation of Congress leaders and workers to protest against hike in power tariff by the UP government concluded on Monday.

The party demanded rollback of the power tariff hike and threatened an agitation if this was not done.

“Apart from taking out a lantern procession from Jhandewala Park in Aminabad to GPO crossing in Hazratganj in the state capital last Friday to protest the back-breaking power tariff hike and demand its withdrawal, we carried out a signature campaign across the state during the last four days,” said Congress Legislature Party leader Ajay Kumar ‘Lallu’ on Monday.

He said by staging peaceful demonstration and including people’s voice through a signature campaign, they wanted the government to reconsider it decision of power tariff hike as the people were already suffering due to increasing prices of commodities and rising inflation.

“After hike in prices of petro-products in UP, prices of all essential items have gone up. To add to this, if the government hikes power tariff, it will break the back of the common man,” Lallu said.

“The Congress will not sit silently and watch the anti-people decisions of the BJP government. In the last four days of protests, we have sent out a clear message to the government that people are against the power tariff hike, and if the government does not withdraw it, the Congressmen will take to the streets to exert pressure on the government to rollback the power tariff hike,” the Congress leader said.

Besides Lallu, other prominent Congress leaders who participated in the protest against the power tariff hike included Vinod Kumar Mishra, Siddharth Priya Srivastava, Mukesh Chauhan, Amarnath Agarwal, Onkar Singh and Shailendra Tewari.

Surprisingly, senior Congress leaders, including Congress legislators, were conspicuous by their absence from the protest.
