After the Congress declared Shreshtha Rana, wife of Roorkee’s former Mayor Yashpal Rana, as its mayoral candidate for Roorkee, objections have been raised by other party leaders hoping to be fielded by the party.
They state that Yashpal Rana is accused of selling municipal land and that making his wife the Congress’ mayoral candidate in such a situation will benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Congress should have chosen a dedicated party worker as its candidate, they stressed.
Local Congress leaders Rajnish Sharma, Hansraj Sachdeva, Mamtesh Sharma and others addressed a Press conference at a hotel in Roorkee on Friday. They opined that the Congress high command had ensured a walkover to the BJP by announcing Shrestha Rana as the party’s mayoral candidate.
Her husband and former mayor Yashpal Rana is accused of selling municipal land- a case which is going on in the High Court. Despite this, the party high command has
declared Yashpal Rana’s wife as Congress candidate.
The Congressmen said they have requested the party’s high command and party leaders to reconsider the decision and change the party candidate, fielding any one of the other contenders.
Replying to a query, they said that even if the party does not change its candidate, they will stand with the Congress and its candidate.
