Cops get DCW notice on girl’s rape-murder

Monday, 04 February 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

The Delhi Commission for Women have issued a notice to the Delhi Police on, claiming that they did not press relevant charges and inform the commission in a case, wherein, a 16-year-old girl lost her life after allegedly being raped and thrown from a terrace in Karol Bagh area on January 16, 2019.

The Commission also issued notices to Lady Hardinge and Safdarjang Hospital asking for medical reports of the deceased.

The Commission revealed that on January 16, 2019, the victim had left for job training in Connaught Place but didn’t return home. The following day, she was found severely injured near Karol Bagh, but she succumbed to her injuries on January 20, 2019.

The victim’s family approached the DCW and alleged that their daughter who went missing was raped, and possibly gang-raped and thrown from the terrace.

“In their complaint, the family said that though the Delhi Police has arrested 5 men in this case, they have failed to press charges of rape, murder, kidnapping, POCSO and destruction of evidence in their FIR. Moreover, the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) president of Ekta Vihar, who is helping the victim’s traumatised mother in seeking justice for her daughter, has been receiving threatening calls from police personnel to withdraw his support to the victim’s family,” DCW spokesperson stated in their official release.

DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal in the notice has sought reasons from cops for not pressing relevant charges and for not intimating the Commission regarding this incident, as mandated by the Delhi High Court. The notice also sought the details of police personnel involved in intimidation of the RWA president and action taken against them.

“Crimes against women and girls are growing in the Capital. This girl went through unbearable suffering before succumbing to her injuries. She was from a very poor background and her father had already expired a few years back. We will also file an application in the court to seek victim compensation for the family,” Maliwal said.
