CWC summons city school management

Sunday, 25 August 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

Taking suo moto cognizance, the child welfare committee of Ranchi has summoned the principal of JK International School, a private school situated in Ratu, for allegedly beating up and torturing a student of class 10.

The summon was sent on Friday directing the school principal Sanjay Kumar Singh to appear in front of the CWC bench. However, the principal failed to turn up at the given time and the CWC has now directed the members of the entire school management committee to appear at CWC court on Monday.

“The matter came to our notice on Friday when a vernacular daily published a report regarding this. This is a serious case and we will take the steps best suited for the welfare of the child,” said Rupa Kumari, CWC chairperson.

On August 21, the aggrieved, a resident of Gumla who lived at the school hostel arrived five minutes late to class, following which he was slapped by the school principal, which led to severe damage of his ear drums.

The child was admitted to Rinchi Trust Hospital by class teacher and school nurse after he complained about having ear pain. The guardians of the child were called, and his grandfather filed an FIR against the school principal at Ratu police station.

The child’s grandfather wrote in the FIR that the doctor who treated the child said that there is a blood clot in the ear and the ear drum has been damaged

Kumari said, “The child has gone back to Gumla. We have written a letter to CWC Gumla to provide counseling to the child in his hometown, which would prevent him from the hassle of travelling Ranchi every now and then.”

She added, “CWC Gumla will counsel him and submit the final report to us following which we will take action.”

Kumari informed that despite corporal punishment being prohibited under RTE Act, many schools still continue beating students on the name of punishment.

She said that if the principal is found to be guilty he might have to pay a huge fine.

“Section 75 of Juvenile Justice Act says that if a child is tortured or beaten up the punishment to the accused can be up to three years of imprisonment and Rs. 5 lakh fine,” Kumari said.
