Day 1 of new MV Act rollout: 3,900 challans issued

The Delhi Traffic Police have issued a total number of 3,900 challans on the first day of implementation of the new  Motor Vehicle (amendment) Act. Although, the Delhi Police have

not shared the exact break-up of the data but it has started strict implementation of new amendments from Sunday onwards.

“We have started the drive and the challans are issued following the new amendments. The complete break up data can be analysed only after the day completes,’ said a traffic official.

As per the new amendments of MV Act, the fines for violating road and traffic rules such as jumping red light, using phone while driving, wrong turn, speeding of vehicles and others that disturbs traffic flow and end up in accidents.

If any commuters have a frequent record of traffic violations will be send to jail along with fine and suspension of his/her driving license.

The penalties such as drunk driving, without helmets, without seatbelts, drunken driving has been rose up. The fine for driving without seatbelts and helmets has been increased to Rs 1000 to 100 while, driving without license has been increased from Rs 500(up to 3 months jail or both) to Rs 5000 along with 6month jail or both, Rs 1000 fine for drunken driven earlier it was Rs 2000 and fine for driving despite disqualification and speeding of vehicles has rose to Rs 5000 from Rs 500.

However, the Delhi Government is yet to implement in the city. The Transport department had earlier said that the file reached the department late. Thus, the department will take a day or two implement the act with new amendments.

As per the rules and the section 200 of MV Act, the Delhi Government have to issue a Gazette notification for compounding of certain offences, indicating as to who will be the person who can compound the offences and as to what would be the amount for which the offences can be compounded.

“Since heavy penalties have been prescribed under the Act after a gap of many years, the compounding notification will be issued with serious consultation with the Traffic Police and other stake holders. It should not negate the effect of changes, it should facilitate the enforcement agencies

otherwise their officers will remain busy in court cases only if the offenders do not agree for compounding the amount.

We will decided in a day or two and the public safety and convieniece will be carefully balanced,” the Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot had said earlier.
