A farmer committed suicide by consuming poison in the district allegedly due to crop loss.
The deceased was identified as Sushant Gantayat (42) of Dihanarasinghpur village of Dharmasala block.
Gantayat had consumed pois on Friday and was admitted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. However, his condition deteriorated on Sunday and he breathed his last.
Sources said the deceased had cultivated paddy on two acres of land, black gram and green gram on one acre of land. But the crops were damaged due to water shortage and pest attack.
Family members said Gantayat had taken loans from a Self Help Group and other creditors. He took the extreme step after realising that he wouldn’t be able to repay the loan.
Neither the district administration nor any other Government representative met Sushant’s family till filing of the report.
