Dehradun registers percentage increase in road accidents

The number of accidents reported from across the State in the first six months this year may have dropped but the Dehradun district has registered an increase of 6.06 per cent till May.

The number of people killed in road accidents has also increased by 62.22 per cent while the number of injured has dropped down by 11.21 per cent. The maximum number of road accidents in Dehradun district this year till May involved cars (28 accidents) followed by heavy vehicles (27 accidents). From the month of January to May this year, 140 cases of road accidents have been reported, while in the corresponding time period previous year 132 cases of road accidents were reported.

 This year the number of people killed in road accidents is 73 while in the corresponding time period last year the number was 45. The number of injured people has decreased from 116 last year to 103 this year.

The maximum accidents happened this year till May involving cars with a total 28 cases reported in which 12 died and 25 were injured. The second highest number is of heavy vehicles with total 27 cases being reported in which 20 people lost their lives and 15 were reported injured.  E-rickshaws on the other hand were involved in zero accidents and zero casualties.

Two wheelers were involved in 25 road accidents cases, 16 cases each of buses and unknown vehicles were reported while two cases involving tractor trolleys were reported.

 The maximum road accidents cases were reported in the time slot of 12 pm to 3 pm, in which 12 people lost their lives and nine people were injured. Additional Transport Commissioner (ATC) Sunita Singh said, “There are multiple stakeholders responsible for reducing the number of road accidents. We are working with other departments as well to ensure zero road accidents.

 Of course, getting 100 per cent result is ideal, but we are working to make the system better. For this many of our policies are in place. People also have to take some responsibilities and abide by the traffic rules which are there to ensure their safety.”
