Parents of children studying at St. Xavier’s School got parenting tips from Delhi based motivational speaker and psychologist Geetanjali Kumar.
Addressing the parents, Kumar said, “When boys get hurt, parents should not stop them from crying by saying things like ‘boys don’t cry’ or ‘only girls cry’ as it leaves a negative impact on them.”
She said that these words lead to young boys becoming introvert and they end up not sharing their problems with anyone their entire lives, which later leads to health related complications. Kumar was addressing parents in a programme on smart parenting organised Magis auditorium in the school campus on Saturday.
Kumar urged the parents to share the real reason behind not purchasing anything expensive for their children. “When parents do not share the actual reason behind them not giving in to expensive demands of their child, it makes the child angry and he or she develops a negative opinion about parents,” she said.
Kumar added, “Do share the actual reason as this will help your child understand the situation and be less aggressive or unhappy.”
Kumar suggested the parents to make a set of rules at home where the child understands the meaning of yes and no. Also, if they play during study hours, they should be made to realise that it is a mistake, so as to ensure that the children do not repeat it.
Focusing on the role of a mother after the birth of the second child Kumar said, “It is important that when a woman gives birth to the second baby, she should also fulfill her responsibility of taking proper care of the first born as well.”
She pointed out that neglect leads to the first child carrying the burden forever, which later leads to various problems in the family.
Kumar said that school and parents should work in co-ordination to shape the life of any child. She said, “A child follows his or her parents whether at home or outside. In this case, parents should behave in a proper way so that the child can learn lessons of life from them in the best possible way.”
Principal of the school, Father Rosner Xalxo said that the school is focusing on disciplining the children and now changes are visible. He urged parents that while they should give all the love to their child, they should not let it become a weakness.
