Diviyangs flock polling stations to cast vote

Monday, 13 May 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Sensing their duty towards the nation, several differently-abled voters reached polling stations across the national Capital to cast their votes.

Polling staff, police personnel and volunteers deployed at polling stations offered help to differently-abled persons and ensured they cast their votes with least discomfort.

“Physical disability cannot be a barrier in ones’ duty towards the nation as each vote counts.

“It is our duty towards the society to participate in the Government making process,” said Rinku (26), who had come to vote with his neighbor at Vasant Kunj.

“If I can go to watch movie, buy clothes on a wheel chair in shopping malls and market why cannot I go on the most important day for nation to cast my vote,” said Ravinder at Chandni Chowk.

“Last time due to my operation I had missed election but this time I had geared up myself to vote. With first light in the morning my first thought was to get ready and go to vote,” said Harminder, a resident of Karol Bagh.

“There has been a lot of development in Country which has also provided differently abled persons a lot of facility in hospitals, schools, Government offices and others. Seeing this it is my responsibility to vote so that Government can bring more facilities for people like us,” he added.

Badri, 30, who has paralysis in his legs, was accompanied by a neighbour who offered him a ride on his motorcycle to a polling station in Laxmi Nagar of the East Delhi constituency.

He claimed that his pension from the municipal corporation was pending for more than one month and lashed out at political parties for being “insensitive” towards the needs of the differently abled people.

“Still I have come to vote because it’s my duty and it is the only way you can make a change,” Badri said.

Three visually challenged youths - Kuldeep Singh, Adesh Kumar and Manoj Kumar Thakur - cast their votes at Kalkaji Extension polling station.”It is our duty towards the society to participate in the Government making process,” Singh said. “Physical disability cannot be a barrier in ones’ duty towards the nation as each vote counts,” he said.

The three friends, who study at a special school for visually challenged persons, appreciated the arrangements at the polling station and volunteers who helped them in casting their votes.
