DUSU election: 39% voting recorded, results today

Friday, 13 September 2019 | Sanjay | NEW DELHI

Amid controversies related to EVM malfunctioning, polling for Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections ended on Thursday evening.

Overall around 39% voting was recorded which was conducted by authorities in two phases.

Out of total 16 candidates contesting for the post (President, Vice-President, General Secretary and Joint Secretary) there were only four woman candidates (including three for President post ) whose faith will be decided on Friday, after the results are announced.

First phase(for Day colleges) which commenced from 9.30 am to 1 pm on Thursday witnessed 40 per cent of polling while in second phase (for Evening colleges) which started post lunch at 3 pm saw  around 41% students casting their vote. The second phase ended at 7 pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Congress affiliated National Student Union of India (NSUI) had alleged that faulty EVMs were used in the DUSU elections. Ruchi Gupta, NSUI national in-charge tweeted, "Again, in Aryabhatta College, EVM is malfunctioning as usual against NSUI. When the ballot is pressed for NSUI candidate, EVM does not light up to indicate registration of vote." However an election committee member said the votes were being cast but there was some problem with the light that glows. The EVM was replaced, he said, adding 152 votes had been cast.

The RSS student outfit Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) calls the allegations as "upcoming defeat" of NSUI. Delhi state secretary of ABVP, Sidharth Yadav said- "NSUI start giving excuse in form of EVM malfunctioning for their defeat in advance."

The results of the college internal student union were announced on the day of the election. ABVP had a good day winning seats in 30 colleges. Yadav, confident of ABVP's clean sweep victory in DUSU said -"We have worked for students whole year and students are supporting us in this election"

While taking the jibe on Twitter, NSUI alleged that Joint Secretary candidate Abhishek Chaprana was also, allegedly, assaulted and wrongly accused of canvassing for votes by the police at the Dayal Singh College. When asked to comment on the allegations, a Delhi Police official tasked with election duty in DUSU election (who was at Law Faculty during election duty) said that so far police have not received any complaint and the election has been peaceful.

Left backed -All India Student Association (AISA) Delhi state President Kawalpreet Kaur said- "Total turnout is less this time and I am not able to make any comment as of now." Ritwick Raj Chandra, first year student at Law Centre-1, said -he voted for responsible DUSU which will work for student's cause and always available to help them.

ABVP has fielded Akshit Dahiya for the post of DUSU president. NSUI has pitted Chetna Tyagi against Dahiya and Left-backed AISA's Damini Kain for the post of president. The voting has been successfully conducted at 52 polling centers with 16 candidates in the fray and over 1.3 lakh eligible students across the varsity. To avoid any scuffle and smooth voting, security personnel were deployed in large number at polling Booths. The results will be announced on Friday.

Last year final vote count was 44.6 pc and ABVP had won 3 posts while NSUI won 1 post.
