Amid ongoing controversy over serving of eggs in mid-day meal to government school children, PCC chief Mohan Markam appealed to various religious sects of the state as well as the political adversaries to help the government in tackling the malnutrition among poor children, and not to politicise the issue.
“It is a curse on a civilized society that a large number of children in the state are suffering from malnutrition and because the previous government didn’t gave attention to this sensitive matter, the region like Bastar is among the worst affected”, he said.
“As the eggs have nowadays become expensive, it has gone beyond the reach of poor tribal families of far-flung Bastar region. Immediate step is now needed to provide them eggs, which they used to eat traditionally, to counter malnutrition,” the Congress leader added.
Markam further appealed to the people of the state to support the movement launched by the government asserting that the eggs would provide essential nutrients like protein, minerals and vitamin.
As the tribal people generally did not consume milk and milk products, the eggs were the best alternative to fight malnutrition among their children, he added.
