A 10-year-old girl was killed and her mother and younger sister were injured when an elephant attacked their house in Gomia's Ghashri village in Bokaro district, a forest department official said on Friday.
The incident took place late Thrusday night near Barkipunu village on the outskirts of Gomia wildlife sanctuary, said Forest Officer, Shankar Paswan.
The elephant destroyed a wall of the mud house of Atwa Marandi and attacked the family when they were sleeping, Paswan said.
Atwa Marandi's daughter Anita died on the spot while his daughter Mamta Marandi and wife sustained injuries, he said.
Police and forest personnel reached the spot after getting information about the incident, he said, adding that his wife and daughter were admitted to nearby Gomia Health Centre.
Both were out of danger, Paswan added.
Elephant attacks have claimed several lives in Bermo in the past few month. Four herds of elephants are known to be roaming in Nawadih,Peterwar and Gomia blocks areas and forest personnel
have been directed to keep a tab on their movement, the DFO said, adding that villagers too have been asked to stay alert.
Bengal shares border with Odisha and Jharkhand, and the dense forest in this tri-junction area is a prime habitat of elephants.
