Eloquent discussion on myriad issues held

Sunday, 17 November 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

‘We as a society have not yet been able to determine the nature or purpose of development. Is it for us or are we for it?’ This was the question posed by the speakers while discussing the topic ‘Ujala Tarashti Bastiya:Hindi Lekhan Me India Ki Chamak Damak Se Pare’ on the second day of the ‘Valley of Words’ the International literature and art festival, Dehradun on Saturday.

Speaking about his book, author and recipient of Padma Shri, Gyan Chaturvedi threw light on the prevailing world scenario in a material and capitalist world. He talked about how social relations in a traditional society have been transformed under the age of consumerism. Chaturvedi said, “With dedication of days in a year to your familial relations, the consumerism has reduced expression of love and emotions to mere gifting cards”. While pointing out at unsustainable development happening around the world, he said that the scariest darkness is the one which is augmented from the light.

He further said, “The story Pagalkhana is a fantasy where I haven’t named my characters or portrayed them as Indians, as it is a global story. People opposing this market driven consumerism are often termed as the ones detached from the realities of life and impractical. It is about the very dazzle of this consumerism. Hence the only way I could register this plight was through a fantasy’’.

While Chaturvedi spoke about conveying reality of society through fantasy, author of the book Badalta Gaon Badalta Dehat, Satendra Kumar expressed regret on decreasing sheen of sociology as a subject and the unavailability of books in universities in Hindi language even after 70 years of the independence.

Kumar said that there are not much books available on the subject in Hindi language to teach those students who can’t afford to study in renowned colleges. “The books from which we are teaching them consists social models of western society. There is not much about the present scenario,’’ he said. The author added that sociology as a subject should be relatable and must be manifested in our daily lives. The book Badalta Gaon Badalta Dehat grasps everyday life in rural contemporary India.

Uttarakhand based author and academician, Jiten Thakur talked about the realities which still exist today in the so called modern world. The story Chauraha is the story of four females from different backgrounds facing different challenges.

Thakur said that he got the inspiration to write the book after he witnessed the life of all the characters in his book. He said that crossing merely the borders of our urban centres will make one realise, such circumstances exist even

today.
