A notorious criminal, Sanjay Biswal alias Babu was nabbed following an encounter with the Pattamundai police at Karunti Chhak in the Rajnagar area of the district on Tuesday.
Sources said getting information, police intercepted Sanjay while he travelling on a motorcycle on the Rajnagar-Gupti road early in the morning. In a bid to escape, he opened fire at the police.
In retaliation police also fired back and Sanjay received bullet injuries on his left leg. He was initially admitted to the Rajnagar Community Health Centre (CHC) and later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
Sanjay was the main accused in the firing incident at Kandira village in the district on Monday. He had allegedly opened fire and shot a local dead in Kandira village under Rajnagar police station for opposing consumption of liquor in public.
Following the incident, police had drawn a lot of flak. Later, the cops had intensified patrolling in the locality to nab Sanjay.
More than 10 criminal cases including murder are pending against him in Aul area of the district, police sources said. A revolver and bullets were seized from his possession.
