Even after the warning issued by state meteorological department of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday, Municipal Corporation (MCD) of Dehradun started digging right at the Doon Chowk from midnight on Tuesday. This work resulted in exacerbated traffic congestion at one of the busiest and crucial routes in city. With an ambulance also stuck at the main gate of Doon Hospital and people rushing from all directions at once, it became a challenging affair for the traffic personnel present to manage the situation.
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Arun Mohan Joshi said, “Departments concerned are already aware that they need to keep the police department in the loop in case of any such construction work. The traffic department was already informed about the work.” When asked why even after the intimation the district traffic department the enforcement force failed to manage the traffic at the Doon Chowk he said, “After the digging the road area became small, but the traffic flow was as usual which caused some traffic issues but we managed it.”
A commuter stuck in the jam said, “It is a surprise that traffic situation here is so ill managed when everywhere else traffic operation is normal.”
Students going home from MKP PG college said, “During school hours traffic here is busiest, but even after school holiday on Wednesday the traffic situation is at worse. Traffic personnel stationed here lack coordination between each other and thus vehicles keep rushing from all direction.” According to the executive engineer of Public Works Department (PWD) Dehradun, Dhiraj Chauhan, the MCD has started the digging procedure.
