Election Commission of India has banned the exit polls in media from the day of commencement of the first phase of elections till the end of last phase of polling.
Stating this, Chhattisgarh chief electoral officer Subrat Sahoo said action would be taken under relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 if such polls were conducted treating it as violation of election model code of conduct.
Similarly, a ban has also been imposed on all types of opinion polls or its publication, 48 hours prior to the end of polling.
As per the circular issued by the ECI, there will be a total ban on publication in print, electronic media, cinema, television or any other medium of the exit polls from 7am of April 11 (first phase of polling) till 6.30pm of May 19 (last phase of polling in the country).
The CEO has said that commission has directed to send this information to all the newspaper bureau, media organisations and televisions channels.
