Farmer electrocuted in farmland in Salepur

Tuesday, 03 December 2019 | PNS | CUTTACK

A farmer died when he came in contact with an 11-KV electric wire at his farmland in the Salepur area of Cuttack district on Sunday.

Gagan Bihari Mallick of Purbabanahara village under Chikola panchayat had gone to his land to cut paddy crops. He thrashed the crops with a stick as part of the agricultural activities. Accidentally, the stick touched the wire passing over his farmland and he was seriously injured.

He was rushed to the Salepur Community Health Centre and then shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital after his condition deteriorated. Doctors at the hospital later declared him dead.

After the news of Mallick’s death spread, locals and the deceased’s family members blocked the Cuttack-Chandbali road near Kulia Bazaar demanding compensation.

Police reached the spot and assured the agitators to provide Rs 10,000 from the Red Cross Fund. Following this, the roadblock was withdrawn.
