Father held for honour killing

Tuesday, 10 September 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

In a suspected case of 'honour killing', a 50-year-old man, along with his friend, was arrested for allegedly killing his daughter.

The incident had taken place in July this year at northwest Delhi's Adarsh Nagar area. Father was opposed to his daughter's affair with a man with whom she wanted to get married.  Enraged over his daughter's relationship, the man strangled her to death and then tried to cremate her body to eliminate all the evidences.

The accused has been identified as Lakhan and his friend Raju (30), both residents of Lal Bagh and they were arrested by police on Sunday.

According to a senior police official, a police control room (PCR) call was received on July 24 in which the caller said that an 18-year-old woman has committed suicide and her family members had taken her to cremation ground in a hurry.

"A police first reached the residence of the victim and found that the family members of Sheetal had taken her body for cremation at Kewal Park cremation ground. On reaching the cremation ground, they found that Sheetal's body had been put on the pyre and all arrangements were made for funeral," said the senior police official.

"The police team took the body into possession and shifted it to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital for the post-mortem. The autopsy report mentioned the cause of death was asphyxia due to manual strangulation. All the injuries were ante-mortem in nature," said the police official.

"A case under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) has been registered at Adarsh Nagar police station and the accused were arrested on Sunday," said Vijayanta Arya, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), North West district.

"The accused have been arrested on Sunday at around 11 AM. They have confessed their involvement in the commission of offence," said the DCP adding that the girl was in love with a man with whom she wanted to get married but her parents refused the proposal.
