Fines for traffic rules violation up by 100%

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued nearly 4,000 challans on the first day of the implementation of new Motor Vehicle Amendments (MV) Act. The large number of challans were issued for dangerous driving (567), without helmet (336), red light jumping 207. While, a total number of 45 challans have been issued and send to the e-court for drunken driving, 195 challans issued for seat belt violations, 42 for speeding of vehicles and 28 people caught triple riding till Sunday.

As per the data shared by the Delhi traffic police, within 24 hours, the police have caught 3900 people for violating road and traffic rules.

However, the traffic police is currently issuing only challans to the persons violating the rules though the e-court format as the Delhi traffic Police has not got the power yet to compound challans and collect cash on the spot.

“We have not assigned the power to compound the challans, thus traffic police is issue challans and collect necessary documents and send the complaint to the Court.

The traffic police can start compounding and collect cash on the spot only after the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD). A rank wise notification is issued by the city government and after that the police will get the power to compound the challans on spot,” said NS Bundela, Joint Commissioner of police, (Traffic).

Bundela also said that, “With conducting drive, the traffic police are also creating awareness among the people about the new amendments. Further, to stop corruption and ruckus on the spot, body worn cameras have been installed to keep it clean and rigid. Currently, there are 626 body worn cameras with Delhi traffic Police. Besides, cameras are installed at Red Lights

and other spots to stop violations.”

The updated amendments under the Motor Vehicle (amendments) Act were implemented on August 31st. Under the updated amendments, the fines for various traffic rules violations have gone up by 100 per cent. Also, certain violations which had no provisions also got a set of fine and rules.  As per the new amendments of MV Act, the fines for violating road and traffic rules such as jumping red light, using phone while driving, wrong turn, speeding of vehicles and others that disturbs traffic flow and end up in accidents.

Commuters having a record of traffic violations will be sent to jail along with fine and suspension of his/her driving license.

The penalties such as drunken driving, without helmets, without seatbelts, drunken driving has been rose up. The fine for driving without seatbelts and helmets has been increased to Rs 1000 to 100 while, driving without license has been increased from Rs 500(up to 3 months jail or both) to Rs 5000 along with 6month jail or both, Rs 1000 fine for drunken driven earlier it was Rs 2000 and fine for driving despite disqualification and speeding of vehicles has rose to Rs 5000 from Rs 500.

The Government had earlier said that it will implement the new amendments in a day or two after having a meeting and discussion with the traffic police.
