Handmade phulkari, punjabi juttis, and other handicrafts from culturally-rich state of Punjab would soon be available on the e-commerce portal Flipkart. For, the Flipkart and Punjab Government on Thursday joined hands to take on board the state’s “under-resourced” sellers, artisans and weavers to Flipkart through its ‘Samarth’ initiative.

On the first day of the Progressive Punjab Investment Summit-2019, Flipkart signed two memorandum of understandings with the Punjab Government to increase business and trade inclusion opportunities for MSMEs in the state.

Under the ‘Samarth’ initiative, the Punjab’s sellers will be brought into the e-commerce fold and provided national market access, training and support to grow their businesses.

A senior government official informed that as a part of the first MoU, “Flipkart and the Punjab Bureau of Investment Promotion will focus on showcasing Punjab’s hallmark products and some of the selected local artisans and weavers in the Flipkart Samarth programme will receive some benefits including incubation support”.

Official said that under the second MoU, Flipkart will conduct workshops in various cities across the state to build awareness amongst MSMEs about the benefits of e-commerce and to ensure ease of onboarding, operating and scaling up for MSMEs in the state.

Notably, there are more than 1.6 lakh MSMEs presently functioning in Punjab. And from Punjab, the Flipkart marketplace has about 3,000 sellers.

Appreciative of the development, Invest Punjab Chief Executive Officer Rajat Agarwal said that through this partnership, “Punjab’s traditional arts and culture will gain wider visibility on the national stage and our MSMEs will get national market access”.

“With the help of e-commerce, we aim to continue promoting the skills and industrial prowess of the people of Punjab with the rest of the county,” he said.

Flipkart Group’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Rajneesh Kumar said: “With every artisan or MSME that gets onboard Flipkart, we are a step closer to making e-commerce even more inclusive for all Indians.”

Flipkart spokesperson said that the lakhs of MSMEs operating in Punjab are crucial drivers of job creation and economic growth, and reflects the state’s enterprising spirit. “The developing e-commerce industry provides new business opportunities for these sellers, many of whom are unfamiliar with how to sell online, and do not get to interact with online marketplaces to clear their doubts regularly. And to resolve these issues, Flipkart has recently initiated a program to conduct workshops across the country,” said the spokesperson.
