Three days after a 25-year-old doctor was found with her throat slit in her rented house in Central Delhi’s Ranjit Nagar, Delhi Police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old doctor on the charges of murdering her.
The accused has been identified as Dr Chandra Prakash Verma who was arrested by Delhi Police from Roorkee in Uttarakhand. Dr Garima Mishra, a native of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, was found dead at her home in Central Delhi’s Ranjeet Nagar. A broken kitchen knife with bloodstains was found from the spot.
Her neighbour Verma had been missing since Tuesday night and was caught on CCTV camera leaving his home with a backpack. According to the murdered doctor’s landlord, she stayed in a single room on the third floor of the apartment and the next room was shared by two other male doctors, Chandra Prakash Verma and Rakesh. Dr Mishra was last seen by the landlord at around 11:45 pm on Tuesday night.
According to Dr G Ram Gopal Naik, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Branch, Verma was traced using his call records and based on his WhatsApp activities following which police team swung into action and nabbed him before he could commit suicide by jumping into the Ganga canal near Roorkee.
“During interrogation, the accused revealed that he was working with private Hospital in Karol Bagh area, as a Junior Resident doctor, after completing his MBBS form King George Medical University Lucknow UP. He was residing in a rented flat at Ranjit Nagar on sharing basis with one Rakesh Yadav. In the hospital the Dr. Garima who was also a junior resident doctor, asked him to help her in getting accommodation. He offered one room of his rented flat to her so that she could get accommodation at a cheaper price,” said the DCP.
“After Garima shifted in a room of the rented flat of the accused while the accused and his friend shifted themselves in the other room of the flat. This made accused feel that Garima was attracted towards him. Meanwhile Garima left the job and started preparing for the MD degree and started spending more time on her studies. This made the accused irritated and he started thinking that she was avoiding him,” said the DCP.
