Ganga canal closure extended by five days

Thursday, 24 October 2019 | PNS | Haridwar

Every year, the Ganga canal is usually closed down on Dussehra night for cleaning and is reopened on Deepawali night. Considering the fact that various works for the 2021 Kumbh Mela are currently underway, the Kumbh Mela administration has requested the Uttar Pradesh irrigation department to extend the Ganga canal closure period by five days. Generally, the flow in the canal is reopened by Deepawali but this time, due to pending works, the needful will be done five days later.

Kumbh Mela officer, Deepak Rawat, had written to the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department and explained that the duration of Ganga canal closure should be extended. He has stated that there are some works in Mayapur and other areas too which have to be completed.

Considering this, the Kumbh Mela administration has requested the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department to extend the closure dates. According to official sources, now the Ganga canal will be back in full flow from November 2 instead of October 27.
