The Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) administration is waiting for the arrival of the team of Medical Council of India (MCI) for the crucial letter of permission ( LoP) for the fourth batch of the MBBS course. It is expected that the team of the apex body of medical education will arrive any time after the festival of Holi. On the report submitted by the MCI, the Union Ministry of medical, health and family planning would grant permission to the medical college to clear decks for the admission to the students for MBSS course.
Meanwhile, to fulfil the criteria of MCI, the college administration has increased the number of beds in the GDMC hospital from 300 to 410. This hospital, in fact, has more than 500 beds for the patients. However, to meet the MCI standards which lists specifications like minimum distance between beds, accompanying facilities and staff, the hospital would show only 410 beds to the MCI team.
When contacted, the principal GDMC Dr Ashutosh Sayana told The Pioneer that the college is fully geared up for the MCI visit. He further said that the newly appointed assistant professors have started joining the college and claimed that the teaching staff deficiency which earlier was at more than 30 percent has been reduced to less than 20 percent.
It is worth mentioning here that the MCI, the apex body of medical education, had granted the LoP to the GDMC on June 08 2016 based on which the admission to 150 students was given in the, 1st year MBBS course. Later, the renewal of LoP was done for the college after which students in the II and III batches were granted admission in the year 2017 and 2018. The new LoP would clear the way for the college to take admission in its fourth batch of MBBS course from the merit of NEET in July- August this year.
