Go Green to be mantra of Durga Puja celebration in Jamshedpur

Friday, 23 August 2019 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The Steel City can expect a more eco-friendly festival this year. With a sense of responsibility, Jamshedpur Durga Puja Kendriya Samity ( JDPKS) has decided to focus on cleanliness and safety during this festive season. The apex body of puja committees in the city has asked the puja committees to ensure security and cleanliness of their campuses too.

At its annual general body meeting at Utkal Association in Sakchi, JDPKS asked the members to create a safe and eco-friendly environment for celebration. Puja committees were asked to focus on lightweight idols, simple pandals and eco-friendly practices.

Superintendent of police (City), Subhash Chandra Jat, who also attended the meeting, said that the puja committees will celebrate with responsibility towards environment. He said that the administration will make elaborate security arrangements for the festive season.

Meanwhile, JDPKS officials requested administration to carry up work related to repair of roads and streamlining of power supply in the city, including strengthening of overhead cables and maintenance of cleanliness and sanitation during the festivals.

Ram Babu Singh, general secretary of JKDPS said that JUSCO will provide dustbins at rivers banks during the immersion process so that plastic and other wastes do not go into the river.

He promised to get the work completed within the stipulated time and asked the committee members to submit their problems in writing.

He went on to add that the members of the organisation have been directed to ensure that they use idols made of non-toxic colour only. From last few years they are working hard to stop water pollution during immersion of idols. This year too they would strictly implement the guidelines

During the meeting, the members raised problems concerned with cleanliness of the ghats, electricity and other issues.

The general secretary said that they would take up the issue of cleaning and developing the Subernarekha ghats with the district administration so that the immersion of the idols is held in a clean environment.

This year Durga Puja committees will also provide bhog pot in jute or cloth bags and also shun use of plastic in every way possible.

The special officers of all the three local urban bodies – Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Mango Notified Area Committee and Jugsalai Municipality have been asked to ensure that the puja pandals do not use any type of plastic near the puja venue.
