Govt scanner on paid news

Wednesday, 20 March 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

In a bid to keep a check on paid news, the District Election Officers (DEOs) in Jharkhand have formed dedicated teams to scan newspapers and monitor news channels. Not only this, they are also maintaining a record of all the election related news coverage in their respective districts.

During a review meeting with the DEOs over videoconferencing on Tuesday, Chief Electoral Officer L Khiangte sought details about the arrangements made in each district to monitor paid news.

The DEOs told Khiangte that dedicated teams have been assigned in each district to monitor news channels and scan English, Hindi and other vernacular dailies.

The monitoring teams have already been given access to all the news channels and leading newspapers for this purpose, they added.

Meanwhile, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Vinay Kumar Choubey asked the DEOs to dispose all the cases related to non-bailable offenses and take actions against habitual offenders under section 107 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Act.

“For conduction of election in fair and peaceful environment, it is important to take actions against habitual offenders,” he said.

He sought details about the arrangements made for differently-abled voters, all-women polling booths and other basic facilities at polling stations.

All the districts must try and address the complaints made on cVigil app within 100 minutes as assured by the Election Commission of India, Choubey added.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer Manish Ranjan also spoke to the DEOs on Tuesday over videoconferencing and asked them to maintain a record of non-scheduled flights to and from Jharkhand cities during the elections. He said that it was the duty of officials concerned to keep a check on the passengers traveling by non-scheduled flights and also monitor the electioneering items transported by such flights.

He said that voters’ helpline number 1950 has received a positive response in Jharkhand. However, there was need to hold training sessions for the executives who answer queries over phone, he added.

Elections for the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Jharkhand will start in the fourth phase of 17th General Elections this year.
