GPS watches under trial facing technical glitches

Tuesday, 19 February 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has brought 15 Global Positioning System (GPS) watches in the month of January for trial. The objective behind using these watches is to check whether the sanitation inspectors as well as the other staffers of the civic body are present at the wards according to their assignment. The MCD officers said that the trial is for one month.

However, some say that as per the information received from some quarters, the trial is likely to be unsuccessful. They say that some technical issues are involved which might pose snags. Besides, the cost might be a dampener as it is very high, they said.

The civic body officers said that almost 15 watches, taken on rent for trial, have been disturbed among the sanitation inspectors so far. Speaking of the matter, a civic body officer said that the trial is being conducted by them. “ However, the problem we are facing is that the battery is getting drained out in just two hours since they are put to use. Besides, the rent of such watches is also very high. In such a situation, it would be difficult  for the civic body to buy such watches for all the sanitation workers working in various wards across the civic body limit,” he said while requesting anonymity.

When queried about the matter, the chief health officer MCD Dr Kailash Joshi said, “The GPS watches are under trial for one month. We have disturbed 15 watches among our sanitation inspectors so far. The reviews by the inspectors would be considered before we go for buying such watches. The battery pickup problem  has been communicated to the manufacturer. If this is fixed satisfactorily, we would further think of buying them. Now, we are not in a position to say anything”

It is pertinent to mention that MCD is paying around Rs 7,000 for each of such watches to the manufacturing company per month for the trial period. The cost of a single GPS watch is Rs 15,000, it is learnt.
