Gramin Seva driver has shady past, say police

Wednesday, 19 June 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Sarabjeet Singh, the Sikh auto-driver whose scuffle with Delhi policemen created a political uproar, is no saint either, said police. He carries a shady past and has been found to be involved in four criminal cases and the most serious of these being the incident inside Bangla sahib Gurdwara, it said. Sarabjeet had attacked a ‘Sewadar’ and broken his hands.

What is noteworthy here is that his son was also present there during the physical fisticuff. His son has been accused of trying to run over police personnel of  Mukherjee Nagar on Sunday.

According to police records, Sarabjeet was booked under preventive sections (Code Of Criminal Procedure, CrPC, 107/151) in 2006, 2011 and 2013 by Delhi police in North and North-West district and recently in April 2019 a First Information Report (FIR) under section 323(voluntarily causing hurt), 341(wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) was also registered against Sarabjeet at Parliament Street police station after he assaulted a ‘Sewak’ in Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in national Capital.

According to Sarabjeet’s neighbours in Sant Nagar near Burari, he lives with his minor son, who has also been named in the FIR. Sarabjeet was separated with his wife longtime ago due to his angry behaviour.

It may be noted that the Delhi Police has registered cross cases in regard to Sunday’s incident that took place in the area of Mukherjee Nagar. Based on the statement of the policeman who sustained injuries while on duty, an FIR has been registered against Grameen Seva driver Sarbjeet Singh for the assault by use of sword, and the other case has been registered on the complaint of Sarbjeet Singh for certain alleged excesses committed subsequently which can also be seen in a video. Both the cases have been registered as per the complaints under provisions of law dealing with assault and use of force. For independent investigation, the cases have been transferred to the Crime Branch.

“Manish Kumar Agrawal, Joint Commissioner of Northern Range is separately conducting a detailed fact-finding enquiry into the matter. On the basis of his preliminary findings, three police personnel, including 2 ASIs have already been placed under suspension for their unprofessional conduct in handling the situation.  Further necessary action, as warranted, will be taken on the basis of the findings of the enquiry”, said Additional PRO Anil Mittal.
