HC issues contempt notice to Nainital DM

Tuesday, 19 March 2019 | PNS | Nainital

For not complying with its earlier orders, the High Court of Uttarakhand served contempt notice on the Nainital district magistrate Vinod Kumar Suman. Last year, the high court had given the municipal corporation one year’s time to set up a waste management plant for proper disposal of waste in Haldwani but nothing has been done in this regard so far.

For not implementing the orders of the High Court, the Indiranagar Janvikas Samiti had filed a contempt petition. On this, the single bench of justice Manoj Tiwari issued a contempt notice to the Nainital District Magistrate.

In the past, the Haldwani based Indiranagar Janvikas Samiti had filed a public interest litigation in the High Court stating that the municipal corporation was dumping medical waste and other garbage in Indiranagar and near Gaula river. Such improper waste dumping was affecting about 30,000 persons living in the surrounding areas, the petitioner had stated.

Earlier, the High Court had ordered a stop on dumping of garbage in the said area. Despite this, the authorities concerned continued to dump garbage from Haldwani, Nainital, Bhawali and Rudrapu areas at the said location. In its submission to the High Court, the municipal corporation had stated that it had not yet received permission from the forest department for building a trenching ground in the area.
