HC seeks reply in Doon liquor deaths' case

Friday, 01 November 2019 | PNS | Nainital

In the case of six deaths in Dehradun due to consumption of spurious liquor, the high court of Uttarakhand has sought replies from the Dehradun senior superintendent of police, investigating officer, Excise department and the state government in three weeks.

The division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Alok Kumar Verma issued this direction while hearing on a public interest litigation filed by Dehradun resident Pramod Sharma.

The petitioner has stated that after consuming spurious liquor on September 19, six persons had died in Dehradun while six had fallen sick.

He has alleged that the police are delaying the investigation in the case due to political pressure.

The State Government has not even provided compensation to the families of those who died in the episode.

The petitioner has also stated that he and the local residents had written to the police and excise department on many occasions regarding the illicit sale of liquor in the area.

However, the authorities concerned did not take any concrete action on the complaints against the illicit liquor business due to which the said incident took place.

Alleging that the police are investigating the deaths under political pressure and trying to shield the culprits, the petition has demanded that the probe into the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The bereaved families should also be paid compensation, demanded the petitioner.

It will be recalled that six persons had died after consuming spurious liquor in the Nai Basti locality of Pathariya Peer colony in Dehradun during September.

A few persons accused in the case including former councilor Ajay Sonkar were arrested by the police while some officials of the police and excise departments were also suspended in the aftermath of the incident.
