Heritage walk, Kathak and Sufi Music enthrall audience

The third day of Virasat, the arts and heritage festival saw a number of people participating in a heritage walk from Khalanga Smarak to Khalanga top on Sunday morning. Later in the evening, Kathak dancer Shinjini Kulkarni, the granddaughter of Pandit Birju Maharaj, enthralled the gathering with her performance.

Sufi singers Jyoti and Sultana — the Nooran sisters also performed during the evening. Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio was the chief guest on the occasion.

Earlier, the heritage walk headed by Sargam Mehra lasted about three hours and was joined by about 90 people.

The walk talked about the battles fought in Khalanga and Nalapani.

In the evening, Shinjini Kulkarni began her performance with Hari Vandana composed and written by Pandit Birju Maharaj and proceeded to show the traditional Toda, Paran and Tihai in Teen Taal and Dhamar.

Her next presentation was Dadra,

“Kaise main jaoon sham roke dagariya”, composed by her great grandfather Pandit Bindadeen Maharaj.

She was accompanied on Tabla by Yogesh Gangani, Gayaki by Zoeb Hassan and on Sarangi by Ghulam Mohammad.

The day’s programme concluded with performance by the Nooran sisters.
