House tax collection in slums to resume soon

Saturday, 25 May 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to resume collection of house tax in slum settlements. At the same time, officials stress that payment of house tax is not proof of ownership. The municipal commissioner of Dehradun, Vinay Shankar Pandey said, “The collection of the house tax in slums was stopped earlier due to some reasons. We recently had a meeting with the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ in which we were directed to start the process again which can help MCD to earn more revenue.”

However, he clarified, “I want to convey a message to the general public and also to people living in the slum settlements that paying house tax to MCD is not a proof of ownership.

The house tax we charge is for the services we give like street lights, door to door garbage collection and sanitation among others. The house tax charge slip is not a document to prove ownership of the place.”It is pertinent to mention here that the MCD had last collected house tax from slum settlements last during July 2018.

It had stopped the house tax collection following the direction given by the High Court to remove encroachments from the city. It is also worth mentioning here that property tax is one of the major sources of revenue for the MCD.
