Chhattisgarh Director General of Police D.M. Awasthi handed over probe into the suspicious death of Miki Mehta to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Raipur, a move that is likely to add to the trouble of suspended DG Mukesh Gupta.
Mehta died at the residence of Mukesh Gupta in Raipur under suspicious circumstances on September 7, 2001. Gupta did ‘Gandharva Vivah’ with Miki and was living with her in his official residence.
The then DG Girdhari Nayak was conducting the probe into the matter and before retirement he had reportedly handed over the probe report to the current DGP. In his investigation, Nayak had found serious lapses in the FIR lodged in connection with the case in 2001.
In view of the findings, the DGP has now handed over the case to the IGP Raipur and instructed him to investigate the matter afresh.
Notable, the main accused in the case Gupta, a controversial and daring IPS officer, was suspended by the Congress government recently for illegally tapping phones of state’s political bigwigs during the previous BJP regime.
