II stage of Panchayat polls: Cong still clueless

Tuesday, 29 October 2019 | PNS | Dehradun

Even as the ruling BJP has taken a lead in the second stage of the Panchayat election by declaring candidates for nine posts of district Panchayat presidents and 51 block Pramukhs, the opposition Congress is still not able to get its act together.

It is worth mentioning here that the Congress party had also dithered on declaration of official candidates of party for the election of three tier Panchayati raj bodies.

A similar situation is being witnessed in the second stage of the Panchayat polls in which the elected members of the block Panchayats and the members of district Panchayats would elect Block Pramukhs and President District Panchayats respectively.

The State Election Commission has released a list of interim reservation for the posts of district Panchayat Presidents and invited objections on the list. After that the commission would release the final reservation list and hold the second stage of the elections. The Commission is expected to declare the dates soon as it naturally don’t want to delay things as it would lead to more time for horse trading and other permutation combination. Officially the Congress party is claiming that it in position to make its presidents in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Almora, Chamoli, Pauri and Pithoragarh. However on the ground, the party is looking out of sorts to tackle the onslaught of the BJP.

When contacted the Vice President of the state unit of the Congress party, Surya Kant Dhasmana said that the party is waiting for the final list of reservation from the state election commission.  On BJP announcing its candidates, the Congress leader said, “How can they declare official candidates when the final picture of reservations is not clear and what will happen if after objection the status of reservation is altered? It shows that the BJP leaders are hand in glove with the state election commission,’’ he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Pritam Singh has said that the election results have categorically proved that the people of the state have given their mandate against the State Government.

He claimed that the party has performed exceedingly well in the first stage of Panchayat elections. He has also accused the BJP Government of the State for meddling with reservation status and other things to make things in its favour in the Panchayat elections.
