IIIT to help cops curb cyber crimes, use technology in policing

In keeping pace with technological development and discharging duties more effectively and efficiently and further to control crime, particularly cyber crimes a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between IIIT-Delhi and Delhi Police for setting up of Centre for Technology and Policing (CTP) at the Okhla campus of IIIT, Delhi.

Registrar of IIIT-Delhi and Additional Commissioner of Police, Cyber Technology signed the MOU, in presence of Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik and Director IIIT-Delhi. The Centre of Technology will assist Delhi Police in identifying appropriate technology for crime investigations, maintenance of law and order, traffic management, administration, intelligence gathering and Citizen Services.

It will further provide research based inputs to provide the various ways in which the technologies can be adopted and accepted by the various stake holders and will induct various technological solutions for capacity building and skill enhancement.

It will also help in framing policies and guidelines for use of technology in policing. LG Anil Baijal, stated that in the age of technology, police should be thoroughly conversant and equipped with technology based tools for crime control.

The use of engineering and technology, artificial intelligence and augmentation of existing communication systems would serve as force multipliers in boosting police efficiency and effectiveness.

Delhi Police informed the LG it is continually modernising its force to keep pace with advent of new technology in policing and actively exploring the possibilities of state-of-art technology and innovative technological solutions for handling crime, cyber crimes particularly financial crimes, criminals, law and order management, traffic management, intelligence gathering, combating terrorist activities and delivering citizen services.

It was also further stated that to keep pace with technology development, it has become necessary to involve different stake holders from research organisations, Universities and private organisations operating in specialised fields like engineering, technology, law and public policy to assist Delhi police in discharging its duties more effectively and efficiently.
