Illicit liquor worth `70 lakh seized

Illicit liquor worth over Rs 70 lakh has been seized from a house at Karipani, Bermo in Bokaro district but culprits managed to flee from the spot, ASP Bermo, R Ramkumar, said on Monday.

Police raided the house of one Sanjeev Kumar Singh at Karipani under Chandrapura police station area on Sunday night following a tip-off. This information was shared by Bokaro SP, P Murugan. A total 941 boxes of liquor including 10 loose cartoons worth Rs 70 lakh were seized during the raid, said police.

Murugan said a person, identified as Sanjeev Kumar Singh, allegedly procured a huge consignment of illegal liquor from other States including Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh and stored it in the house at Karipani, located around 20 kms from Bokaro.

As per primary investigation, the liquor bottling was done in Arunachal Pradesh and Haryana, the officer said, adding that the seized stock was meant for distribution in interior parts of district ahead of Holi festival.

In its effort to prevent the flow of illicit liquor to Bokaro district town and its surroundings villages, the team of Bokaro thermal (Umesh Kumar Thakur), Chanderpura (Sudhir Soren) led by ASP R Ramkumar seized a huge consignment of foreign liquor. Around 941 and 10 cartoons other opened liquors of different brands of foreign liquor were seized during the raid, police said.

The seized items have been handed over to the State excise department after a case was registered, the SP added.

Police also seized 2 bikes, One scooty, one Car (JH 09AG-1395) and one Boloro jeep from the house, the ASP added.

A case has been registered under Excise Act, the ASP said, adding that further investigation is underway.
